O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. She advanced to the top 100 round due to the fact that judges were awed with her performances. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed by her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the bottom three once again. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
